Two wheels. Or three. Or just one! Add pedals, a fresh helmet, and yourself, and those are the four basics needed to enjoy National Bike Month.

Can you believe National Bike Month has been going since 1956? Back then, bicycles were viewed more as toys and less as all-purpose transportation delights.

So things have changed, and mostly for the better. For example, there are now hundreds of bike rides across the nation during the month of May. No matter what kind of cyclist you are, you can find a ride this month that will be aimed at you.

May is the month when CycloFemme, a national women’s ride, happens. There’s also a Bike to Work day and week, as well as a Bike to School day.

And there’s New York City’s 5 Boro Bike Tour, which is the world’s biggest charitable bike ride, with 32,000 cyclists braving Manhattan, The Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island on streets free of car traffic. The Nutcases will be at 5 Boro with our brand of crazy and a booth for last-minute helmet buyers.

What’s you favorite May bike ride?
